WORLD HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE DAY
12th October 2013
WHAT IS WORLD HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE
DAY?
World hospice and palliative care day is
a unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care
around the world.
WHEN DOES WORLD HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE
DAY TAKE PLACE?
World
hospice and palliative care day takes place on the second Saturday of October
every year. This year it will be celebrated on the 12th of October.
WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF WORLD HOSPICE AND
PALLIATIVE CARE DAY?
1.
To share our vision to increase
the availability of hospice and palliative care throughout the world by
creating opportunities to speak about the issues
2.
To raise awareness and
understanding of the needs – medical , social, practical, spiritual, of people
living with life limiting illness and their families.
3.
To raise funds to support and
develop and palliative care services around the world.
WHO ORGANISES WORLD HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE
CARE DAY?
World hospice and palliative care day is
organised by a committee of the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance, a network
of hospice and palliative care national and regional organisations that support
the development of hospice and palliative care worldwide.
WHO CAN GET INVOLVED?
The day is for anyone and everyone who
cares about or is involved in hospice and palliative care anywhere in the
world. If you are an organisation, with or without experience of Palliative
Care, you can do something to support the cause worldwide – begin by supporting
the hospice and palliative care services in your own region.
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
Anybody can get involved in WORLD HOSPICE
AND PALLIATIVE CARE DAY and raise awareness and funds for their local hospice
and palliative care services. These services need your help to ensure that
people living with life limiting illnesses, their families, friends and carers
receive the care and support they need.
There are many ways to get involved and
here are a few suggestions to get you started. You can arrange your own
activity or join with others that are
already taking place.
- Organise an event!
- Hold your Government to account on their commitment to palliative care for people with non-communicable disease.
- Find and contact your local hospice and palliative care service and see how you can support their work.
- Share your story and read about other people’s experiences.
- Find and take part in events that are taking place near you.
- Sign the online declaration for palliative care and pain treatment as human rights.

Achieving universal coverage of
palliative care: Dispelling the myths
“Myth busting” around the world!
MYTH: Having hospice and palliative care means you will die soon.
FACT: Hospice and palliative care is not just for the end of life. It is a holistic
approach that includes caregiver support, spiritual care, bereavement and much more.
The truth is...Hospice and palliative care is about having the best quality of life for however long life remains. Palliative care patients have serious illnesses that eventually bring about the end-of-life but up until then it is important to be free from pain, symptoms, and suffering. Recent studies show that many patients who receive palliative care may live longer than those receiving standard care based on a more curative model.
breathlessness and can be safely used, but other measures are also needed to address pain including counseling and social support.
MYTH: Hospice and palliative care is just for people with cancer
FACT: All those who are diagnosed with a chronic life-limiting illness can benefit
from hospice and palliative care
The truth is...Many people still think that hospice and palliative care are just for cancer patients. In the early days of hospice most patients had cancer but as hospice and palliative care have grown, more patients with non-cancer life threatening conditions are being cared for. These conditions include heart, lung, liver, kidney, brain, and motor neuron diseases as well as very frail elders. International research shows that about 70% of all people who die would benefit from access to palliative care services
MYTH: Palliative care manages pain through the use of addictive narcotics.
FACT: Palliative care is holisitc care that provides psychosocial and spiritual
care along with pain and symptom management.
The truth is... The founder of the modern hospice movement, Dame Cicely Saunders, came up with the concept of “total pain” to describe how patients with life limiting illnesses experience suffering in many dimensions. These include physical, social, psychological, and spiritual or existential suffering. Pain relievers like morphine are essential to good palliative care to relieve pain and other symptoms and can be safely used, but other measures are also needed to address pain including counseling and social support.
